Car Hire Chalkidiki Kallithea — Your Base for Three Peninsulas, Ancient Ruins Turquoise Aegean Beaches
Chalkidiki is one of Northern Greece's best-kept
secrets from the rest of the world — and one of the worst the worst-kept secrets from
Thessaloniki, whose residents have been driving to its beaches every summer
weekend for generations. Three dramatic limestone peninsulas — Kassandra,
Sithonia, and the monastic Mount Athos — thrust southward into the northern Aegean
like a trident, each with a dramatically different character: Kassandra the
cosmopolitan, Sithonia the wild and unspoiled, Athos the sacred and restricted.
At the heart of Kassandra sits Kallithea — meaning literally 'beautiful view'
in Greek — the most developed and most vibrant resort on the peninsula, perched
on a pine-forested hill above a double Blue Flag beach, with the ancient ruins
of the Temple of Zeus Ammon visible along the shoreline below. It is
simultaneously the best-connected base and the liveliest destination on the
first peninsula.
A car hire Chalkidiki Kallithea
booking transforms your Chalkidiki holiday from a single-resort stay into a
full three-peninsula adventure. From Kallithea, the entire Kassandra peninsula
is within a 45-minute circuit — its Blue Flag beaches, pine-fringed coves,
Venetian towers, Byzantine churches, and cave-churches all accessible on your
own schedule. More critically, a rental car bridges the gap between Kassandra's
resort infrastructure and Sithonia's wild beauty: Kavourotripes (the Blue
Lagoon), Vourvourou Bay, and the secluded coves of Toroni and Porto Koufo are
35–75 km from Kallithea and effectively inaccessible by public bus on any
convenient schedule. A car makes you the driver of your own Chalkidiki
experience.
Finalrentals Greece offers car rental
Kallithea Chalkidiki with hotel delivery to your accommodation,
unlimited mileage across the entire region, transparent all-inclusive pricing
with no hidden extras, and free cancellation on most bookings. Our fleet covers
every Chalkidiki driving scenario: compact economy cars for Kassandra's narrow
village lanes, family SUVs for Sithonia's unpaved cove access tracks, and
automatic models for relaxed coastal driving. Book online, choose hotel
delivery or our local desk collection, and begin exploring all three peninsulas
from day one of your Chalkidiki holiday.

WHY RENT A CAR IN CHALKIDIKI KALLITHEA
Hotel Delivery — Car Comes to
You — Unlike airport pickups, car hire Kallithea Chalkidiki with
Finalrentals includes free delivery to your hotel or apartment in Kallithea.
Your car is waiting when you want it, not tied to a flight schedule. No taxi to
a depot, no shuttle, no queuing. The car arrives at your accommodation door,
inspection is done on the spot, and your Chalkidiki exploration begins
immediately.
Sithonia Is Unmissable — and
Needs a Car — This is the single most compelling reason to hire a car from
your Kallithea base. The Sithonia peninsula — 35 km east of Kallithea — is
where Chalkidiki reaches its most spectacular. Kavourotripes Beach (the 'Blue
Lagoon') is widely photographed and consistently ranked among the most
beautiful beaches in Greece: white rocks, multi-toned turquoise water, pine
trees to the shoreline. Vourvourou Bay is a sheltered complex of islands and
inlets perfect for kayaking and snorkelling. Porto Koufo is the deepest natural
harbour in Greece. Toroni has an ancient acropolis above its perfect crescent
beach. None of these are served by practical public transport from Kassandra —
a rental car is the only solution.
Kassandra's Hidden Villages
Reward Exploration — Beyond Kallithea's resort amenities, the Kassandra
peninsula holds dozens of villages and beaches that reward those who venture
off the main coastal road. Afitos (15 km north) is one of the most beautifully
preserved medieval villages in Northern Greece: cobblestone lanes, stone-built
houses, a clifftop square with sweeping sea views. Sani (20 km north) hosts one
of Greece's most prestigious annual jazz festivals (August). Ancient Olynthos,
30 km north at the peninsula's base, was one of the great cities of ancient
Greece — sacked by Philip II of Macedon in 348 BC — and its excavated streets,
mosaics, and houses are remarkably complete.
Mythology, Mythology
Everywhere — Chalkidiki is a region saturated with mythological
significance. The Kassandra Peninsula itself is — according to legend — the
rock that the goddess Athena hurled at the Titan Enceladus during the
Gigantomachy, the great war between gods and giants. Petralona Cave (50 km
away) contains evidence of human habitation dating back 700,000–800,000 years —
one of the most significant palaeontological sites in Europe. Mount Athos, the
'Holy Mountain' (70 km east), has been continuously inhabited by monks since
the 10th century and contains 20 monasteries of extraordinary Byzantine art and
manuscript collections. All reachable by car from Kallithea.
Competitive Daily Rates with
Unlimited Mileage — car rental Chalkidiki rates are competitive
across all seasons. Economy vehicles from €25/day with unlimited mileage means
that driving from Kallithea to Sithonia, back through the Chalkidiki interior,
north to Thessaloniki, and out to Petralona Cave adds nothing to your daily
rate. Weekly bookings offer further savings for longer stays.
HOW TO COLLECT YOUR RENTAL CAR
Option A — Hotel Delivery
(Recommended): Book online at finalrentals.gr and select hotel delivery for
your Kallithea accommodation. Finalrentals delivers your car directly to your
hotel or apartment at the agreed time. A representative meets you on-site,
conducts a brief vehicle inspection, completes the paperwork (approximately 10
minutes), and hands you the keys. You are mobile from that moment.
Option B — Thessaloniki
Airport Collection: If arriving by air into Thessaloniki Makedonia Airport
(Thessaloniki Airport car hire), collect your
vehicle from our SKG arrivals desk and drive directly to Kallithea — 85 km,
60–70 minutes via the E75 motorway. This option is ideal for travellers who
want maximum flexibility from the moment they land.
Step 3 — Vehicle Inspection
and Chalkidiki Map: Our representative provides a Chalkidiki road map, key
distances and driving notes for Sithonia access roads (some are unpaved —
important for vehicle choice), and 24/7 emergency contact details. You are then
free to explore Kassandra, Sithonia, and the broader region at your own pace
and schedule.

TOP DESTINATIONS REACHABLE FROM KALLITHEA
I. Kallithea Town & Beach — Your Base
Kallithea itself offers more
than most resort towns. Founded in 1922 by refugees from Minor Asia (from the
town of Maltepe near Constantinople), it has grown into Chalkidiki's most
cosmopolitan resort while retaining a genuine Greek character alongside its
tourist infrastructure.
•
Kallithea Beach (Double Blue Flag 2024) — A
well-organised golden-sand beach with shallow, calm water — ideal for families
and those who prefer swimming without waves. The beach extends along the base
of the pine-forested hill below the town. Best section: right-hand side
(eastern end) where the water is shallowest and calmest. Beach bars, sunbeds
(€10–12), water sports (jet ski €40/15 min, pedal boats). Morning swim, then
the ancient ruins investigation.
•
Temple of Zeus Ammon Ruins — The excavated ruins
of an ancient sanctuary of Zeus Ammon — a syncretic deity combining Zeus with
the Egyptian god Ammon — are located directly on the shoreline at Kallithea
Beach. The sanctuary dates to the 4th century BC and would have been a significant
religious site for the ancient Macedonian kingdom. Walking around the excavated
stone foundations while standing on a Blue Flag beach is a uniquely Chalkidiki
experience — history and sun-loungers coexisting perfectly.
•
Pearl Club Nightlife — Kallithea is widely
regarded as the nightlife capital of Chalkidiki. Pearl Club is consistently
named the most popular nightclub in the entire region, drawing visitors from
across northern Greece and Europe. Bouzouki clubs nearby host live performances
by prominent Greek musicians throughout summer. Beach bars operate from midday,
transitioning to evening DJ sets. The clubs are situated away from the village
residential area — noise considerations are minimised.
•
Shopping District — Kallithea is the largest
shopping hub in Chalkidiki. The main street and surrounding lanes hold gold
jewellery shops (Northern Greece has a strong tradition of gold craftsmanship),
clothing and fashion boutiques, souvenir stores, pharmacies, two supermarkets,
and a bank. Everything needed for a comfortable resort stay is within walking
distance.
II. Kassandra Peninsula Circuit (15–50 km |
15–50 minutes)
The full Kassandra peninsula is
a 100 km circuit from the Nea Potidea canal at the base to Cape Paliouri at the
southern tip, back up the western coast. With a rental car, this is a perfect
full-day exploration:
•
Afitos Village (15 km north | 18 min) — Widely
considered the most beautiful village on the Kassandra peninsula and among the
finest traditional villages in all of Northern Greece. A perfectly preserved
medieval settlement of stone-built houses, cobblestone lanes, and a dramatic
clifftop main square perched above the Aegean with sweeping views toward Mount
Olympus on clear days. Several excellent local tavernas, Byzantine church, and
a small beach below the cliff. An essential Kassandra stop.
•
Sani Resort & Beach (20 km north | 22 min) —
The most prestigious resort on the Kassandra peninsula, home to a luxury
marina, five-star hotels (Sani Beach, Sani Club, Sani Asterias), and one of
Greece's most acclaimed cultural festivals: the Sani Festival (July–August,
international jazz, classical, and world music). Sani Beach itself is a long,
white-sand Blue Flag beach with organised facilities and a characteristically
glamorous Chalkidiki atmosphere.
•
Nea Potidea Canal & Ancient Walls (30 km north |
32 min) — At the very entrance to the Kassandra peninsula, Nea Potidea is
built on the site of the ancient city of Poteidaia — a Corinthian colony that
was a key cause of the Peloponnesian War (432 BC) when Athens besieged it. A
canal cut through the isthmus now separates Kassandra from the mainland.
Sections of the ancient city walls survive along the waterfront.
•
Hanioti Beach (25 km south | 28 min) — One of
Kassandra's most popular beaches: a long, organised sandy beach on the eastern
side of the peninsula with excellent water sports facilities, multiple beach
bars, and a vibrant resort village behind it. The beachside promenade is lively
in the evenings.
•
Pefkochori (35 km south | 38 min) — A
pine-forest resort on Kassandra's southern tip with a beautiful Blue Flag beach
and the nearby Glarokavos natural sea-lake. The Monastery of Agios Ioannis of
Rossou is worth a short visit. Quieter and more family-oriented than Kallithea
or Hanioti.
•
Cape Paliouri & Loutra Sulphur Springs (50 km
south | 50 min) — The southern tip of Kassandra at Cape Paliouri features
dramatic sea views. Loutra village nearby is famous for its natural sulphur
springs with therapeutic properties — used since antiquity and still operating
as a small thermal spa.
III. Sithonia Peninsula (35–75 km | 35–75
minutes)
Sithonia — Chalkidiki's middle
finger — is a completely different world from Kassandra: wilder, less
developed, with dense pine forests running to the water's edge and beaches
ranging from organised resort strips to near-deserted coves accessible only via
unpaved tracks. A rental car is completely essential for Sithonia.
•
Kavourotripes Beach — 'Blue Lagoon' (50 km | 55 min)
— Consistently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in Greece. A series of
small coves cut into white limestone rocks, with extraordinary multi-layered
turquoise water (light turquoise in the shallows, deep blue in the channels,
emerald where the rocks meet the sea). Pine trees grow directly to the
clifftops above. The access road is unpaved — SUV recommended. Arrives via
Ormos Panagias (Sithonia's north). Famous enough to be very busy in
July–August; early morning arrival essential.
•
Vourvourou Bay (45 km | 48 min) — A sheltered
bay containing a cluster of small uninhabited islands creating natural lagoons,
channels, and coves of extraordinary clarity. Boat hire for inter-island
exploration is popular. Kayak rentals available. The village has tavernas and a
relaxed family atmosphere quite unlike Kassandra's resort energy.
•
Porto Koufo (75 km | 75 min) — The deepest
natural harbour in Greece, almost completely enclosed by land — from the sea,
the entrance is virtually invisible. Used as a submarine base during World War
II. Today a fishing village with excellent fish tavernas and an atmosphere of
genuine authenticity. The enclosed harbour creates a lake-like calmness
regardless of external sea conditions.
•
Toroni Ancient Acropolis & Beach (70 km | 70
min) — A crescent beach of golden sand with an ancient Macedonian acropolis
visible on the headland above — excavations have revealed fortification walls,
towers, and a 5th-century BC basilica. One of Sithonia's most historically
interesting beaches.
•
Neos Marmaras & Porto Karras (65 km | 65 min)
— Sithonia's main town with a working harbour, good fish restaurants, and
access to the enormous Porto Karras estate — one of Greece's largest private
wine estates, producing excellent Assyrtiko and Cabernet Sauvignon. Winery
tours and tastings available.
IV. Ancient Olynthos (30 km | 32 minutes)
Olynthos was one of the great
cities of ancient Greece — the capital of the Chalcidian League — until Philip
II of Macedon razed it to the ground in 348 BC. The archaeological site,
declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site candidate, is remarkably well-preserved
and covers an entire ancient city grid: streets, houses, workshops, wells, and
extraordinary in-situ mosaic floors depicting mythological scenes. The mosaics
are among the finest surviving examples of 4th-century BC Greek domestic art.
Entry €6. Open daily. Rarely crowded — extraordinary for a site of this
historical significance.
V. Petralona Cave (50 km | 50 minutes)
One of the most significant
palaeontological sites in Europe, Petralona Cave in the foothills of Mount
Katsika contains evidence of human habitation dating back 700,000–800,000
years. A complete fossilised human skull — the 'Petralona Man' (Archanthropus
europaeus petraloniensis) dated to approximately 700,000 years old — was
discovered here in 1960. The cave itself is spectacular: vast chambers with
stalactite and stalagmite formations developed over millions of years, and the
fossilised bones of cave bears, lions, hyenas, and other Pleistocene megafauna
embedded in the cave floor. Entry €10. Guided tour included. A genuinely
extraordinary excursion from Kallithea — absolutely unlike anything else in the
region.
VI. Thessaloniki Day Trip (75 km | 60 minutes)
Thessaloniki — Greece's second
city and 'co-capital' — is within comfortable day-trip distance from Kallithea.
The Thessaloniki car hire guide covers the city in
detail, but key highlights for a Kallithea day trip include: the White Tower
(€4), the Byzantine walls and Ano Poli upper town (free), the Archaeological
Museum (€8 — Macedonian royal gold, Vergina finds, Derveni Krater),
Aristotelous Square and the waterfront promenade, and the legendary food scene
— Thessaloniki is considered Greece's culinary capital, with a bougatsa
(custard pastry) tradition, fresh seafood, and the best street food in the
country.
VII. Mount Athos — The Holy Mountain (70 km |
65 minutes to Ouranoupolis)
The third Chalkidiki peninsula
is a self-governing monastic republic — the Mount Athos peninsula, home to 20
Eastern Orthodox monasteries continuously inhabited since the 10th century.
Entry is restricted: men only, and only 10 non-Orthodox visitors per day are
permitted, requiring advance application for a 'diamonitirion' permit. However,
boat tours from Ouranoupolis (70 km east of Kallithea) provide spectacular
views of the cliff-perched monasteries without landing — a visually
extraordinary 3-hour boat excursion past Byzantine architecture clinging to sea
cliffs, with the 2,033m snow-capped peak of Athos rising above. One of Greece's
most unique and powerful travel experiences, accessible from Kallithea by
rental car.
DRIVING IN CHALKIDIKI — PRACTICAL GUIDE
•
Drive on the RIGHT — Standard European
continental driving.
•
Speed Limits: 50 km/h in villages and resort
areas | 90 km/h on regional roads | 120–130 km/h on E75 motorway toward
Thessaloniki. Speed cameras operate on main routes. Weekends in July–August:
E75 toward Chalkidiki is extremely busy on Friday afternoons — depart before
13:00 or after 20:00.
•
Kassandra Roads: Main coastal road around
Kassandra (EO Neas Potideas Neas Fokeas) is well-surfaced and accessible to all
vehicles. Village streets in Afitos and smaller settlements are narrow —
economy car recommended for village exploration. Parking is generally informal
and plentiful throughout Kassandra.
•
Sithonia Roads: Main road along Sithonia's spine
is tarmac throughout. Final approach tracks to Kavourotripes and some other
remote coves are unpaved — SUV recommended. Do not attempt unpaved Sithonia
tracks in a low-clearance economy car.
•
IDP Requirement: Non-EU licence holders (UK
post-Brexit, US, Australian, Canadian) must carry a valid International Driving
Permit alongside their national licence. Arrange before travel — cannot be
obtained in Greece.
•
Petrol Stations: Plentiful in Kallithea,
Kassandra villages, and along the Sithonia spine road. Refuel before heading to
remote Sithonia coves or Petralona Cave. Most accept cards.
•
Alcohol Limit: 0.05% BAC — strictly enforced.
Greek traffic police operate regular checkpoint stops in resort areas during
summer.
•
Parking in Thessaloniki: If day-tripping to the
city, park in a peripheral multi-storey (€5–8/day) and use the city's excellent
pedestrian routes. Avoid driving in the old town.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is hotel delivery available for car hire in
Kallithea?
Yes. Finalrentals Greece offers
free hotel and apartment delivery throughout Kallithea and the surrounding
Kassandra resort area. Book online and specify your accommodation. A
Finalrentals representative delivers your vehicle at the agreed time, conducts
the inspection on-site, and completes paperwork in approximately 10 minutes.
You do not need to travel to any depot or office. Alternatively, collect
directly at Thessaloniki Airport (85 km away) for those
arriving by air.
Do I need an SUV for the Chalkidiki region or
will a standard car work?
For Kassandra peninsula driving
— Kallithea, Afitos, Sani, Hanioti, Pefkochori, and all main resort beaches — a
standard economy or mid-size car is perfectly adequate. The main Kassandra
coastal road is well-surfaced. For Sithonia peninsula exploration —
particularly Kavourotripes Beach (Blue Lagoon), which requires an unpaved track
approach — an SUV or crossover is strongly recommended. Any exploration of
remote Sithonia coves or the Mount Katsika foothills (Petralona Cave) also
benefits from an SUV.
How far is Thessaloniki Airport from Kallithea?
Thessaloniki Airport Makedonia
(SKG) is 85 km from Kallithea — approximately 60–70 minutes via the E75
motorway. This is a straightforward drive with no toll booths until the
Chalkidiki junction (€1.80 toll). If you are arriving by air, collecting your Finalrentals
vehicle at the Thessaloniki Airport desk and driving directly
to Kallithea is the most efficient approach.
What is Kavourotripes Beach and how do I reach
it from Kallithea?
Kavourotripes — known as the
'Blue Lagoon' — is a series of small coves cut into white limestone rocks on
the Sithonia peninsula, 50 km east of Kallithea (55 minutes). It is
consistently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in Greece for the
extraordinary multi-tone turquoise of its water and the pine trees growing
directly above the cliffs. The final approach is via an unpaved track — SUV
recommended. Arrive before 09:00 in July–August to secure parking and avoid
peak crowds. Note: there are minimal facilities on-site — bring supplies.
Can I visit Mount Athos from Kallithea?
The Mount Athos peninsula (the
third Chalkidiki finger) is a restricted monastic republic — men-only entry by
advance permit (10 non-Orthodox visitors per day). However, boat tours from
Ouranoupolis (70 km east, 65 minutes from Kallithea) circle the peninsula
offering spectacular views of the cliff-perched monasteries and the 2,033m peak
without requiring a permit. Boat tours run approximately €25–35 per person and
last 3 hours. Booking ahead is recommended in high season.
What is the minimum age to rent a car in
Chalkidiki?
Minimum age is 21 years for
economy and mid-size vehicles (licence held at least 12 months). SUV and
premium categories require 23–25 years old. A young driver surcharge applies
for ages 21–24. No upper age limit providing the licence is valid.
Is Afitos worth visiting and how far is it from
Kallithea?
Afitos is absolutely worth
visiting and is one of the most rewarding easy excursions from Kallithea — just
15 km north (18 minutes). It is widely considered the most beautiful village on
the Kassandra peninsula: a medieval settlement of stone-built houses on
cobblestone lanes, with a clifftop main square providing breathtaking views
across the Toroneos Gulf toward Sithonia. Several excellent traditional
tavernas make it an ideal lunch destination. Combine with a swim at the small
beach below the cliff for a perfect half-day.
